The Massachusetts Attorney General, Martha Coakley has been after Mega Life for quite some time and has finally negotiated a $17 million settlement with the health insurer and its affiliated companies for a host of market conduct issues dealing primarily with the sale of health insurance and the disclosure of benefit limits. As noted in AG Coakley's press release, “These companies used unfair and deceptive marketing and other practices to convince Massachusetts residents to buy health plans with limited benefits. Massachusetts health care consumers must be fairly told what they are buying, and their premium dollars should be used predominantly to pay health care benefits and not inflated commissions, overhead and profits. We will continue to pursue companies that seek to prey on Massachusetts residents looking for health insurance.” This settlement, which was first reported in August, will bring needed relief to consumers and adds to Mega Life's earlier fine of $20 million assessed by insurance regulators.
